Paper analysis (Papyrus)

The paper analysis add-in is a software package that is used to assess, among others, the paper quality, or the print quality of ink jet printers on paper.

It contains the following functions:

Bleeding and Wicking Test (Inkjet Printability)

An important quality feature, namely the display of objects when printing with ink jet printers can be evaluated with this test.

Bleeding: adjacent colors flowing into one another

Wicking: border sharpness of a text in black and white printing

Mottling Test

Mottling only appears when paper is being printed on. It is caused by fluctuations in the surface characteristics of the paper. Mottling can be described as cloudiness.

Gravure printing “missing dots”'

The fully automated evaluation of missing dots in gravure printing is used for quality assessment. The missing dots are displayed on the image overlay.

Gravure printing “Heliotest for missing dots”

Pressure points with a cumulative coverage rate are imprinted on a test strip with the dimensions 8x11cm. The computation results in the length of the line for 20 “missing dots” in mm (with no decimal places), or rather, the number of “missing dots” per 100 mm2.

Structural analysis of paper

During the production of paper, imprints develop from the sieve or felt. These indentations influence the printing results. Therefore, it is important to understand the exact cause of the markings for the product- and process optimization of the paper manufacturer, the mechanical engineer and the manufacturer of covering materials (sieves and felts).

Formation analysis of paper

The uniformity of weight distribution (cloudiness) on paper influences many of the paper’s characteristics (such as the printability or tensile strength). These characteristics are examined through transmitted light and can be determined with the aid of digital image analysis.
