Carbon Black Analysis in accordance with ASTM D 3849 Draft ITEM 18

M.A.S… developed the analySIS® “carbon black analysis” add-in for the evaluation of TEM micrographs with digital image analysis of carbon black aggregates.

The add-in is deployed by one of the leading carbon black manufacturers in quality control and research.

The add-in includes the morphological characterization of carbon black aggregates from TEM micrographs. A component of the add-in is the standard ASTM D 3849, regarding the computation of primary particles’ sizes.

The add-in has the following functions:
  • Computation of primary particles’ sizes of carbon blacks in accordance with ASTM D 3849 Draft ITEM 18
  • Computation of the degree of branching of carbon black aggregates
  • Computation of the aggregate empty space (percentage value: particle area/circular area with the distance between the center of gravity and the furthest point as radius * 100)
  • Shape classification in circular, ellipsoid, linear and branched carbon black aggregates using discriminant analysis
  • Computation of the individual shape class’s fractal dimensions
  • Measurement of the thickness of carbon black aggregates through an intensity calibration
